Auguste PEUREUX founded his distillery in 1864 in Fougerolles at the foot of the Vosges mountains. The distillery specialised in the production of fruit brandies, including the famous Fougerolles kirsch, and before long these eaux-de-vie had acquired a widespread reputation, their excellence being recognised at the 1900 World Fair in Paris.

Established in 1898, Distilleries et Domaines de Provence has inherited a tradition that goes back several millennia: collecting medicinal plants on Lure mountain, known for its wealth and abundance of plant species. As far back as the Middle Ages, gatherers of medicinal herbs distilled the carefully-gathered medicinal plants and became peddlers. During the 17th and 18th centuries, these peddlers set themselves up as pharmacists or apothecaries trading in many of the towns in the region. In the 19th century, some became pharmacists, others distillers, with a few becoming both at once. The specialties they made from the Lure plants were often drinks or beverages with cleansing, tonic, digestive, aperitif or refreshing qualities. Wine and alcohol, maceration and distillation, were all used to draw out and preserve the plants' aromas and active substances. It was not until the end of the century that distillers began to specialize in the production of liqueurs and aperitifs. Today, Distilleries et Domaines de Provence has kept this expertise alive for more than 100 years and shared it with the rest of the world, much to the delight of spirit lovers everywhere.

Theo Preiss Distillery is located at Mittelwihr in the heart of the vineyards of Alsace. Jean Camille Preiss, a wine producer focusing on wines from Alsace set up a secondary operation, distilling fruit from his orchards as well as Alsace grape brandies. After the Phylloxera epidemic caused by a tiny louse imported from North America that attacked the rootstock of the vines and threatened to wipe out the wine-growing region of Alsace he was even more insistent on quality processes. It was his son Theo Preiss who set up a small artisanal distillery in 1945. Following his premature death in 1967 his heirs passed the company on to a member of the family, Jacques BRESCH. In 1979, Andre Thuet joined the company to steer expansion into new markets.
