La Garelle's vineyard, 35 kilometres to the east of Avignon, covers 50 acres at the foot of the Luberon mountain between the villages of Oppède and Ménerbes, which is listed as one of France's most beautiful. Its 'terroir' is exceptional, being both sandy and stony and vines have been grown here since Roman times.

This traditional family of independant wine-growers since 1780 has been producing great chablis wines since the end of the XVIIIth. After Henri, Ulysse and Roger, Claude the great-rand-son founded the Domaine de la Meulière. The arrival of Nicolas and Vincent, his sons, has opened a new way of working with new winemaking techniques, but always with the know-how of four generations.

Fifth generation to cultivate the vine, I inherited a part of the property in 1984. Five years later, I decided to develop the winery to become independent winemaker. After a few years in the ongoing effort to develop better wines and noting that conventional farming methods depleting the soil and the quality of these wines, I decided to go back to basics: respect for the land and the plant. The culmination of this process was the decision to convert the entire property in Organic Agriculture.

We inherited from our great-grandparents seven hectares of vineyards in the surroundings of the town of Banyuls We still keep the invoices of the large casks bought by our great-grandfather J. Parcé in 1904, attesting the winegrowing activity of our family in those days. Subsequently, our great-grandmother Thérèse would take the grapes of the family estate to the cooperative winery created between the two wars (her husband died in 1913). Since then and until 1984 the grapes of our family were taken to the cooperative, which receives nowadays the majority of the grapes of the region (around 70%). Our grandfather Léon was a brilliant student. After his studies at the Polytechnic school, being an enthusiast of long-distance telephonic cables, he founded with other engineers a company where our father made career as well. That is why we did not live in Banyuls in our childhood, returning only for the summer holidays.

The 20 hectares currently in production are trained on wire trellising and the wine growing technique remains traditional. Even if the Devictor family does not wish to claim out loud any particular attachment to the organic label, the methods and processes are respectful of nature and its basic principles: organic fertilizers, Bordeaux mixture “bouillie bordelaise” (copper) and sulfurs are used for the treatment of vines. No weed killer and no insecticide are tolerated. The plots of land are large-sized (approximately 4 ha) to facilitate the mechanical work of the vineyard. They are planted from east to west to avoid the grip of the wind when the Mistral blows strongly.
